No Christmas lights switch-on for Dewsbury - but festive celebrations will be ‘better than ever’ say Kirklees Council
Kirklees Council has confirmed that there won’t be an official Christmas lights switch-on event taking place in Dewsbury and Huddersfield this year.
The decision has been made due to the “major transport and regeneration works” in both towns.
Instead there will be a full weekend of festive events and activities taking place on Saturday, December 7, and Sunday, December 8, in Dewsbury.
The Council has said that the town centre will be filled with local musicians, attractions, live reindeer, seasonally themed workshops and walkabout acts, as well as Christmas markets with gifts, food and drinks.
Activities will be free for all, including live music stages, Santa's Grotto, snow globe photo booths, snowboard simulator and reindeer rodeo.
Similar events will also take place in Huddersfield town centre on Saturday, November 30, and Sunday, December 1.
Coun Carole Pattison, leader of Kirklees Council and cabinet member for culture, said:
“This year's Christmas celebrations in Huddersfield and Dewsbury are shaping up to be better than ever. With a real emphasis on supporting the high street, championing our local businesses, and free family-friendly fun.
“We're putting the spotlight on some of our fantastic, regenerated areas in Huddersfield, with a Christmas Market set to fill the newly opened event space in St Peter’s Gardens and entertainment taking place on New Street.
“There will be lots of ways everyone can get involved in this year's festivities, and as usual, it is free for all to enjoy.”
Further details of the Christmas programme will be announced by the council in the build up to the festive weekends.
