Voting opens to name Kirklees Council’s new fleet of gritters

Kirklees Council has invested over £1.8 million pounds to secure a dedicated fleet of modern gritters - but it needs help in naming them!

The council is inviting residents to help vote on names for their brand-new fleet of gritters set to hit our roads across Dewsbury, Mirfield, Batley and Spen this winter.

Primary schools across Kirklees submitted their favourite winter-themed suggestions earlier this year and now residents can help decide which names will appear on the 12 new vehicles.

Voting will take place across the council’s Facebook and Instagram this week.

Coun John Hardie, cabinet member for regeneration, highways and transport, said: “I’d like to thank all the schools that have taken part. We have had some fantastic suggestions. It’s wonderful to see so much creativity and imagination across Kirklees.

“Our crews provide an invaluable service during winter, keeping roads safe and communities moving. This investment in our winter maintenance fleet will help us continue delivering that vital service for years to come.

“We’ve got the names, now it’s up to the public. Make sure you get involved and help decide which names come out on top.”

Kirklees Council launched their winter maintenance programme on Monday, October 12, which will run to May 2027.

These new vehicles will be used solely for gritting and will be on hand whenever they are needed during severe weather.

Gritters are an essential part of the council’s winter maintenance service and help keep key routes clear and safe, whilst also maintaining access to vital amenities and essential services like health and social care.
