More donations welcome for Cleckheaton’s refugee crisis appeal

An appeal launched in Cleckheaton for the refugee crisis has been described as a huge success.

Bags of unwanted items including clothing, baby provisions and toiletries have already been donated to send to the migrant camps in Calais.

And the Cleckheaton Refugee Crisis Appeal group are holding another collection tomorrow between 1.30pm and 4pm at St John’s Church.

Vicar of Cleckheaton, the Rev Brunel James, said: “We are raising cash for the Save the Children Refugee Appeal, and collecting useful items which will go straight to refugees arriving in places like Calais and the Greek islands.

“The items collected are basically anything that would be useful when camping, and warm clothes.”

Tomorrow’s event will also include a Cleckheaton Bake Off, with judges giving prizes for the best baking entries.

Possible entries so far include a lemon drizzle cake, a chocolate cake, a carrot cake, a Dundee cake, a coconut and lime cake and cookies.

As well as the baking contest, everyone will be treated to afternoon tea and a slice of the cakes judged in the competition. It will also be an opportunity for people to make cash donations to help transport the donated items to the refugees.

Useful donations include hoodies, shoes, tents, candles, toiletries and non-perishable food. Both adult and children’s clothing are welcome.

Entrants for the baking contest are asked to bring their creations to the church at 1pm.
