Library and new homes dominate council meeting

It was a lively Mirfield Town Council meeting again this week as the community centre and the prospect of new homes on Balderstone Hall fields took centre stage.

After a heated exchange at the previous town council involving one ‘Friends of Mirfield Library’ group, Coun David Pinder spoke about a second group going by the same name in glowing terms.

He said: “They want to organise a meeting of all the friends of library groups in the area in future, which I think is a good idea. It looks like they are a very good group.”

Coun Steve Benson spoke of the ongoing situation with Balderstone Hall fields, expressing concerns that work on the site could severely affect the drainage.

He said that historical mines in the area would have to be filled in, but this would affect the area’s ability to drain away surface water.

“I have been speaking to the Coal Authority about this area,” he said. “I believe that if the site was grouted, the council would have to do soak-away testing.”
