A gluten for punishment!

A patient has teamed up with Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust staff in support of Coeliac Awareness Week.

RAISING AWARENESS Coeliac Disease sufferer Melanie Peace is working with Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust.

Melanie Peace, who was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease two years ago, hopes to highlight the problems faced by people who maybe unaware they have the disease.

Melanie said: “The symptoms were very painful and unpleasant and left me feeling exhausted. I felt generally unwell, uncomfortable and had mild bowel problems.”

Coeliac disease is caused by an intolerance to gluten, which causes inflammation in the lining of the small intestine.

As many as one in 100 people in the UK have the disease, but only 10 to 15 per cent are diagnosed.

Since her diagnosis, Melanie has started following a strict gluten-free diet and made contact with a local voluntary support group.
