‘He’s like my rugby dad’ - Mark Moxon enjoying time with Batley Bulldogs legend John Kear in Wales camp

Batley Bulldogs’ head coach Mark Moxon is currently enjoying time with the Wales international side alongside his “rugby dad” John Kear.

Moxon has been assistant to Kear since he took the role just over ten years ago while he was still head coach at Mount Pleasant, with the duo helping Wales to a European Championship win in 2015, as well as qualification for the World Cup in 2017 and 2021.

Earlier this week, Wales played Jamaica in Neath before heading to France to face Serbia at the Stade d’Albert Domec in Carcassonne next Tuesday. The winners will then play France on Saturday, October 26.

Moxon told the Reporter Series: “When he got the job ten years ago he asked me if I’d assist him there and I’ve been with him all the time.

“He’s like my rugby dad. I enjoy spending time with John and I’ve learnt a lot from him during my time at Batley and with Wales. I do enjoy that time.

“It is like a full-time environment in the short camps that we have. We train through the day and I get a bit of time off work to do that.

“The standard is probably similar to Batley. It’s a mix between a couple of Super League players, mainly Championship, along with some League 1 players. The standard is similar.”

Moxon did confirm that he will still have his Bulldogs cap on during the camp.

“I will still be answering calls, texting and talking to players.

“It’s all rugby so it’s all good.”

Batley’s Elliot Kear is the current captain of Wales.
