Dewsbury Rams will not let narrow first loss 'derail' the team

Dewsbury Rams head coach Paul March insists his side’s first Betfred Championship defeat of the season will not derail his side.

The Rams’ 100 per cent record in the league disappeared at home to Goole Vikings, but they had plenty of chances to win and were only narrowly beaten 16-14 so it is hardly a back to the drawing board scenario.

"It was disappointing, but I don’t think we got the rub of green in certain areas,” said March.

"Last week we did, this week we didn’t and we don’t want to derail from what we’ve done in the first four games.

"We’ve got three wins and we’ve made a decent start to the season.

"We’ve got to be more clinical when we get opportunities. Tom Delaney dropped one over the line going in and Liam Copland missed out in the last seconds.

"We had chances to win the game.”

March added: “It was an old fashioned game in the mud. It was always a forward battle, but I thought we played with some decent skill in the second half to create some opportunities.

"We’ve just fallen short, but we won’t let it derail us.”

March gave the players a few days off after their recent exertions and with Dewsbury not playing this weekend.

Their next game is back at FLAIR Stadium when Barrow Raiders travel down from Cumbria on Sunday, March 8.

A tough test can be expected with the visitors, like the Rams, boasting a record of three wins and just one defeat so far in the Championship.

March hopes to have one of his key players back for the match with competition for places something he is looking for.

He explained: “Jacob Bateman will be back in the next week or so and he’ll be challenging for a spot and we are always on the lookout to bring other players in.

"We’re just trying to keep everybody fresh so we’ll have a couple of days off then we’ll come back in on Friday to start working hard again for the Barrow game.”
