East Bierley and Batley suffer relegation heartbreak on final day of season

East Bierley took their relegation fight right down to the wire, but will go down from Division One of the Bradford Cricket League despite winning their final game of the season.

They could do no more than win against local rivals Batley and hope that Crossflatts were unable to win their last game of the season.

A crushing nine-wicket victory gave Bierley hope of staying up, but news came through later that Crossflatts had also won against Lightcliffe in a game that had been delayed by rain.

It meant double commiseration with both Bierley and Batley being relegated to Division Two.

Batley went into the match above the other two, but their hopes of final day success were soon hit as they struggled with the bat and were all out for just 84 as Abdullah Khan claimed 6-44 and Hamza Saeed took the other four wickets for only 18 runs.

Bierley then made short work of reaching their target, Farakh Hussain finishing unbeaten on 44 and Danny Cross making 28no as they got home in 17.3 overs.

Final day results meant Crossflatts ended on 190 points, three ahead of East Bierley with Batley a further three back.

Already confirmed champions Hanging Heaton rounded off their excellent season with another victory in a thriller at Undercliffe.

A one-wicket success took their points total up to 350 and they have finished 35 clear of Yeadon.

They were made to work hard for their final success after Undercliffe posted 203-9 from a rain-reduced 32 overs.

Heaton used 10 bowlers with Luke Patel the most successful with 3-19.

They also reshuffled their batting order as they were given a revised target of 202 and looked to be heading for a rare defeat this year when reduced to 24-4 and then 50-5.

Umar Farooq steadied the innings with 45 and captain Patel made 39 before Charlie Kendall transformed the closing stages with an unbeaten 38 from 16 balls as Heaton reached their target with one wicket and three balls remaining.

There was a high scoring finish to the season at Birstall, where Baildon piled up 334-5 on their way to a 95-run victory.

Birstall responded positively despite losing early wickets. Shabir Rashid produced the division’s only century on the day, hitting 102 from 74 balls with 13 fours and three sixes, while Noah Chapman made an unbeaten 84 containing six sixes. But the rest of the batsmen could not back up their efforts and they were all out for 239.
