Liversedge battle to earn a point on long trip after finishing with 10 men

After defeats in their previous two league games Liversedge FC dug in to earn a point from their latest NPL East match.

Danny Forrest’s men brought something back from their long travel to the north east to play West Auckland Town and although they were unable to find the back of the net they were pleased to keep a clean sheet in the goalless draw.

The result meant they kept the gap to five points over their hosts with Liversedge remaining in sixth place in the table.

They started the brighter with several early chances they could not take before Auckland eased their way into the contest and came close themselves before half-time.

Despite playing up a slope the visitors were unlucky to hit the woodwork twice, but the second period turned into a bit of a battle for Sedge with a number of yellow cards being dished out by the referee.

Both sides had spells in the ascendancy, but defences remained on top for most of the half.

Sedge finished the game with 10 men after Antony Brown was sent-off late on for a second yellow card offence in the eyes of the referee, but they held on for their deserved point.

“It was a good result, a good point,” said assistant manager Tom Higman.

"Over the last few weeks we’ve not picked up the points we probably deserved a clean sheet and a point on the road is pretty pleasing.

"Further forward we need to be a bit more clinical and take our chances so that is one thing we need to keep building on and keep trying to improve.

"If you are creating chances that’s still a positive because you are getting in the right areas.”

Liversedge now head for a West Yorkshire derby when they take on Garforth Town at the Meat Drunkery Clayborn Stadium this Saturday.

"Garforth will be a tough game, they’ve had a decent start. We’ve got to try and build on this performance, take the fundamentals we’ve done and try and make it three points next week,” added Higman.
