Walks to remember for charity cash

Beth Prescott, of Dewsbury, said she would “never forget” the first time that her grandma Pauline Waring couldn’t remember who she was.

Pauline, 73, requires constant care and her movement has been seriously affected by the condition.

Now Beth is encouraging people to take part in a series of Memory Walks next month to raise cash for Alzheimer’s Society, which helps people with the condition.

She said: “You do not truly appreciate what Alzheimer’s disease does to a person until you see it first-hand.

“I had always assumed it just involved people forgetting where they had left their keys. In reality, that does not even scratch the surface. I will never forget the first time my Grandma did not recognise me. We are such a close family and they have always lived just a couple of streets away from us. It hurt when I realised that it was possible for her to forget who I was.”

The charity’s first walk takes place at Roundhay Park, Leeds on September 5.

A second walk will then be held at Pugneys Country Park in Wakefield on September 6 before the final event at Greenhead Park, Huddersfield, on September 12.

Beth took part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge last year in a bid to raise cash for the charity.

She added: “The Alzheimer’s Society do amazing work both supporting families coping with dementia and investing in research so that one day we can find a cure.”
