But Brookhouse Training, based in Cleckheaton, is bucking the trend, with 95 per cent of its trainees having found work in the last 12 months.

Director James McConnell said: “It has become increasingly important for us to quantify how our training impacts in the real world after our trainees have qualified.”

Selina Douglas, one of the 142 trainees at the gas and plumbing centre, found a gap in the market for female gas engineers.

Miss Douglas, who lives in Dewsbury, now runs her own gas installation and maintenance business in Kirklees.

She said: “I was absolutely sick of making ends meet through dead-end jobs.

“I’ve always been really hands-on and eager to push myself and my capabilities. Brookhouse Training offered a future-proof career; it was just what I was looking for.”

Mr McConnell added: “Selina is just one example of the dedication, capability and absolute professionalism we train and support.

“Our Centre of Excellence goes above and beyond to ensure our students become the most skilled and knowledgeable in the industry.

“It is no surprise they are extremely employable in a sector that is crying out for fresh talent.”
