Dewsbury care home residents unleash their inner superheroes for Alzheimer’s Society

Residents at a Dewsbury care home unleashed their inner superheroes for a day of fancy dress, live entertainment, games and treats in support of Alzheimer’s Society.

Ashworth Grange Care Home held its Superhero Day on Friday, August 28, raising money for the charity while celebrating the everyday heroes who make a difference to others.

Residents enjoyed live entertainment from singer Trevor Woodhead, games, and a visit from an ice cream van, while staff embraced the theme by dressing as their favourite superheroes.

A highlight of the day was a fancy-dress competition, with resident Pauline taking on the important role of judge and crowning carer Samantha ‘Sammy’ Ginnelly the winner for her transformation into Batwoman.

“It’s been a great day,” Pauline said.

There was an extra reason to celebrate as Superhero Day coincided with resident Ken’s birthday and team members surprised him with a birthday card and plenty of birthday wishes.

Team members Samantha, Kirstie Hepworth, Dionne Spence, Jade Herron and Faye Smith were among those involved in bringing the celebration together.

The home raised money for Alzheimer’s Society as part of Bridge Oak Care Homes’ wider Superhero Summer initiative, celebrating the everyday heroes living and working in its homes.

With September marking World Alzheimer’s Month, the celebration also highlighted the importance of supporting people living with dementia and their families.

Sharon Troy, Home Manager at Ashworth Grange Care Home, said: “Superhero Day was a fantastic opportunity for residents, families and team members to come together, have some fun and raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.

“Everyone really embraced the theme, from our team members dressing up to Pauline taking on the very important job of judging our fancy-dress competition. The ice cream van and live entertainment were also a big hit with residents.

“The day was about celebrating the everyday heroes around us, but most importantly it gave residents the opportunity to enjoy themselves, spend time together and make some wonderful new memories.”
