Calderdale and Kirklees landmarks turn blue for NHS workers

The illuminated buildings are a gesture of thanks and support for those on the front line during the current emergency.

Announcing the tribute via social media Coun Shabir Pandor, leader of Kirklees Council, said: “Every Thursday we clap for our great NHS staff, our care workers and our front line key workers to show our appreciation and to say that they’re our heroes in a time of crisis.

“At 8pm we’re going to be doing something even bigger and even better.

“To show our gesture of goodwill we are going to light up Castle Hill.

“Also we are going to be lighting up Dewsbury Town Hall and Batley Town Hall.

“So please do join me in clapping for our great workers. Once again please stay at home , stay safe and only travel if you have to.”

In lighting Castle Hill Kirklees is following the example of neighbouring Calderdale, which has arranged for lights at the top of the imposing Wainhouse Tower to turn blue.

The lights at the top of the 253ft tower will remain blue until further notice.

Calderdale’s approach got the backing of Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman, who called it “a great idea”.

He encouraged Coun Pandor to follow suit.

He joked: “It’s not often that I ask for Huddersfield to be turned blue but on this occasion, I think it merits it.”

Castle Hill has been illuminated in previous years, most recently in 2015 to mark UNESCO’s International Year of Light.
