Spen Valley schools unite in Heckmondwike for the Big Sing

Schoolchildren from across Spen Valley filled Heckmondwike town centre with music and community spirit as they took part in the Big Sing.

The event was part of this year’s Great Get Together celebrations in memory of Batley and Spen MP, Jo Cox, and brought together pupils, teachers and families for a joyful celebration of togetherness, friendship and community.

Children from across the area joined voices in a programme of songs, accompanied by musical backing from students and teachers from Spen Valley High School.

Organiser Sarah Breeze, from Fairfield School, said: “How fantastic that the schools have come along again and joined in the Big Sing in memory of Jo Cox.

“Despite the weather forecast, schools brought more children than previous years. It didn’t dampen our spirits and everyone joined in with what has become an annual event, which the schools very much look forward to.”

The Big Sing created an opportunity for schools to come together in a shared celebration, reflecting the values of kindness, inclusion and unity that are at the heart of The Great Get Together.

Jo’s sister and MP for Spen Valley, Kim Leadbeater, said: “This is really one of my most favourite local events.

“To see the children singing, dancing and participating is really uplifting. It’s also great to see local residents getting involved. What a way to remember Jo, celebrate our local communities and brighten up a rainy Friday morning.

“The pupils performed with enthusiasm and pride and the gathering highlighted the important role schools play in fostering community relationships and giving young people the opportunities to collaborate, perform and celebrate together.”
