Wardlaw inspires Cleck’s derby win

YORKSHIRE pace man Iain Wardlaw produced an inspired bowling display to fire Cleckheaton to a 122-run derby victory at Hanging Heaton in Bradford League Division One last Saturday.

Wardlaw returned impressive figures of 5-24 as Hanging Heaton were skittled out for 76 in reply to Cleckheaton’s 198-8.

Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale returned from a hip injury in a rare appearance for Cleck but the opening batsman was caught on the boundary by James Stansfield for eight.

Captain John Wood (42) and James Lee (35) led the Cleckheaton innings, while Nick Bresnan (4-46) and John Carruthers (3-44) were the pick of the Heaton bowlers.

Leaders Woodlands were given a scare by lowly Farsley as they were bowled out for 111, with opener Sam Frankland (34) top scoring, as spinner Mark Harrison (4-10) and Chris Henry (3-43) posed problems.

Steve Piercey (5-28) and Chris Brice (3-14) reduced Farsley to 91-9 but Henry hit two sixes before he was caught and bowled by Piercey with Farsley just five runs short.

Second-placed East Bierley had two-wicket win over Manningham Mills.

Gulsheraz Ahmed made a sparkling 109 not out as Mills posted 266-9, of which Rao Anjum claimed 3-37.

Lee Goddard made 50 before Nick Walker hit five sixes and six fours in a rapid 67 as Bierley won with nine balls to spare.

Gomersal are up to third in Division Two after a three-wicket win over neighbours Spen Victoria.

Josh Fell claimed 5-46 as Spen made 181-9, with opener Nicky Rushworth hitting 57 and Dan Shuffe (49).

Richard Gould (83no) guided Gomersal home with nine balls to spare.

Hartshead Moor beat Brighouse by 65 runs as Craig Field (32) top scored in their 145. George Saville took 6-19 as Brighouse were dismissed for 80.
