Spen secure toptwenty team finish

SPENBOROUGH Athletics Club runners showed up well on Saturday at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Lightwater Valley.

The weather was mild and the course in tip-top condition.

The club’s best performance was Kevin Ogden’s 35th place out of 240 in the senior men’s race.

Ogden led the men to 20th in the team race.

Other scoring runners were Neil Barker 107th, Gerrard Skipping 160th, Ian Ogden 180th, Edward Wilkinson 227th and Frank Reddington 229th.

The other Spen runner was Alex Boryslawsky who finished 233rd.

The race was won by Sheffield runner Meles Okbazghi.

James Wilkinson in second place led Leeds City to team victory, while third place went to Olympic triathlon bronze medallist Jonny Brownlee.

Under-20 runners Josh Woodcock-Shaw and Simon Bolland were ninth and 11th in the junior men’s race.

Spen’s Under-17 men were led home by Paul Davis in 16th, and with Liam Steadman 19th, Bradley Stanstill-Todd 32nd and James Anthony 44th, the team finished sixth overall.

Samantha Boryslawsky placed 77th in the senior women’s race.

And in the Under-17 women’s race, Emma Wilkinson and Beth Ellis were 14th and 15th respectively.

nPaul Kitson scored the highest break of the season at the halfway stage of the Spen Valley Snooker League with 63 while his team, Brighton Street, remain top of the league by six points.

Despite losing, Westborough moved into third place but fourth-placed Flush SC A have a game in hand and are only two points behind them.

Millbridge A won 9-0, taking them from seventh to fifth, just above Staincliffe CC.

Hartshead A recorded their third successive victory which has moved them from 11th four weeks ago to seventh.

Both Hightown teams won their matches to climb the table to 13th and 14th place.

Bottom-placed Heckmondwike BC gained three points against their lower-table rivals The Moorland.

Other than Kitson’s break, notable performances came from A Carter (Hartshead B) who scored 101 points, Paul Dyson (Staincliffe) 101, M Kay (Millbridge A) 97 and S Rowbottom (Old Bank A) 96.
