Second team finals take centre stage

Birstall Seconds face Carlton in the Central Yorkshire League’s Wheatley Cup final at Wakefield Thornes this Sunday.

Birstall go into the game lying ninth in the CYL Second Teams Premier Division, two places and just six points behind Carlton.

Birstall overcame near neighbours Crossbank Methodists by 10 wickets in the first round and defeated East Ardsley by seven wickets in the second round, on both occasions chasing down scores of less than 100 to win.

They defeated Townville in the quarter-finals and overcame Premier leaders Ossett in the semis last month.

Hanging Heaton will host the Sovereign Health Care Priestley Shield final for the first time on Sunday when Pudsey St Lawrence take on Bradford & Bingley in the Bradford League’s second team showpiece, start noon.

Heaton have won the shield for the past two season’s but were knocked out by Baildon in the first round to deny them chance of a hat-trick on home soil.

St Lawrence will start the game as favourites as they lead Bradford League Second teams Division One.

Ossett will target a place in the Heavy Woollen Crowther Cup final on Sunday when they travel to Bradford League side Pudsey Congs for their delayed semi-final.

The final will be played at Morley on August 31.
