Proud day for Shaw Cross as Sharks are named Community Club of Year

Shaw Cross Sharks ARL have been crowned Community Club of the Year for 2026.

On a proud day for the club Sharks chairman Richard Stephenson collected the prestigious RFL award at the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.

It was a fitting stage to recognise the dedication of all the club’s volunteers, coaches, players, families and supporters who make it such a special place.

Shaw Cross were shortlisted alongside Portico Vine and neighbours Dewsbury Celtic, making it an especially proud achievement for rugby league in Dewsbury.

The Sharks also featured on the shortlist for the Our League Life Award, adding further recognition to a memorable year for the club and recognition for the 80 years of work the club has put into rugby league.

Shaw Cross entered the RFL Community Club of the Year awards on the back of the club’s long history and the work that goes on behind the scenes, much of which people do not always see.

The club celebrates its 80th anniversary next year and is still run entirely by volunteers. Over the years they have been involved in everything from the early BARLA tours and exchanges with French clubs to more recent work with local schools, summer touch rugby and developing the women’s and girls’ game.

The nomination was really about recognising all the people who have kept the club going over the years and the part it continues to play in the local community.

The Sharks are also looking ahead, with a new three-year player pathway starting in 2027, including bringing back their under 18s side.

One of the biggest problems in amateur rugby league is losing lads as they leave junior rugby, start work or college and find other things to do and the club is trying to give them a reason to stick together, keep playing and hopefully progress into the open-age teams.

To win the award is a proud moment for everyone involved and the Sharks are hoping it is something they can build on.
