Harmison thanks to Cleck CC captain

FORMER England cricket international Steve Harmison spent an evening at Cleckheaton CC last Thursday, when he made a startling revelation.

Harmison is a former Durham team-mate of Cleckheaton captain John Wood and took part in a question and answer session with broadcaster John Helm.

Harmison played 63 Test matches and revealed he may not have become an international but for some advice from Wood. He had been selected by England to tour New Zealand but he was unsure whether he wanted to go and took advice from his team-mate.

Wood wrote down a few tips including the words ‘What does playing for England really mean?’ Harmison said he still carries that bit of paper in his wallet as without those wise words he might not have made the trip.

Harmison added Australia’s Ricky Ponting is the best batsman he has faced, while he also touched on the subject of depression in sport, which he has conquered.
