Gary Sykes retains English super featherweight title on Amir Khan undercard.

Dewsbury’s Gary Sykes retained his English super featherweight title with a points victory over Jon Kays on the undercard to Amir Khan’s international bout in Sheffield tonight (Saturday).

Sykes started slowly but picked up the pace as the fight went on and had too much power, speed and skill for the Ashton man.

The fight was quite close until the middle rounds when Sykes took control.

Sykes began to up the tempo in the sixth, when he landed six scoring head shots towards the end of the round.

He then produced a sustained onslaught on the body of Kays in the eighth when it looked like he may force a stoppage.

Kays showed heart to battle until the end but there was no doubting the unanimous winner on all three judges scorecards.

Judge Steve Gray scored the contest 97-94, while Marcus McDonnell and Terry O’Connor had it by a wider margin of 98-94 and 98-93 respectively in favour of the Dewsbury man.
