Webber reunites with old boss at Leeds

NEIL Warnock has made his first signing as Leeds United manager and is closing in on a second.

Striker Danny Webber, 30, who has been without a club since being released by Portsmouth last summer, has signed on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

The former Manchester United forward played for Warnock at Sheffield United and trained with him at QPR at the start of the season. He aimed to prove his fitness when playing in a behind closed doors friendly against Middlesbrough yesterday.

On his signing, Warnock said: ‘I know the player well and he’ll be good to have around the place.

“Danny did really well for me at Sheffield United and I know he is desperate to make a big impact here.

“Danny has kept himself fit and been training hard so I don’t have any problems with his fitness. He could easily be in the squad for Southampton.

“He came in to train with us and did well. Danny is also someone who knows what I want.

“I also believe he has something to prove. He is a player who should walk into any team at this level. So, this is a big chance for him to show that.”

Webber, who has also been training with Manchester United to keep his level of fitness up, is pleased to have been given a chance.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, he said: “I have been keeping myself fit and training at a few other clubs. I got a phone call to come down and have a look and thankfully, it has gone well.

“I am happy that the phone call came and I am raring to go now. Leeds are a massive club with a lot of history and it is a great set up here.

“I have played for Neil Warnock before and hopefully, I can hit the ground running.”

Warnock has also put in an offer to take Leicester centre-half Matt Mills on loan initially and wants the deal to go through before this Saturday’s game against Southampton.
