KBW boxers shine bright as five from Dewsbury club reach Yorkshire finals

KBW Boxing Club, of Savile Town, Dewsbury, has celebrated a remarkable achievement after five of its talented fighters secured places in prestigious Yorkshire Boxing Championships finals.

Romaine Griffin, Bernie McDonough, Hussain Petal, Abu Qadada, and Reece Hussain all navigated their way through earlier rounds with skill, determination, and grit, earning their spots among the best amateur boxers across the county.

For coaches, family, and supporters, seeing five representatives from one local club reach this stage is a testament to the hard work, discipline and community spirit that defines KBW.

The finals, held at a packed venue in Leeds, brought together the region’s top talent – and the KBW contingent rose to the occasion, producing performances that had the crowd on their feet.

McDonough and Petal were in outstanding form, controlling their respective bouts with sharp technique, intelligent movement, and powerful combinations. Both boxers dominated key rounds and showcased the high-level training they receive at the Savile Town gym, putting in displays that did themselves and the club proud.

For Griffin, Qadada and Hussain, however, finals day ended in agonising fashion – each falling to defeat by the narrowest of margins in split decisions.

The winning KBW duo went on to the next stage in Bridlington where they produced superb displays again, dominating from the opening bell, out-thinking and outfighting their opponents to claim Yorkshire titles – thoroughly deserved wins that crowned months of dedicated training.

Their success did not end there. McDonough and Petal were straight back in action at the National Pre-Quarter Finals in Birmingham, where they rose again to the challenge.

Facing top talent from across the country, Bernie and Hussain showed composure, strength, and incredible heart, winning both contests to book their places in the prestigious National Championships, set to take place in Kettering.

It marks a massive milestone for the club – having two boxers represent the North of England at the national finals is a source of immense pride for everyone involved.

Club coach Alan Haque said: “We couldn’t be prouder of every single one of these lads. To get five into the Yorkshire finals is huge – something most clubs only dream of.

"Bernie and Hussain have shown what you can achieve with focus and hard work and they’re flying the flag for Dewsbury and Savile Town with real class.

KBW Boxing Club, rooted in Seville Town, has long been a cornerstone of the local community – nurturing talent, teaching respect, fitness and discipline, and offering a safe, supportive space for young people and adults alike.

Now all eyes turn to Kettering, where Bernie McDonough and Hussain Petal will step into the national spotlight. They carry the hopes of the whole club and the town with them, but whatever happens next, they have already achieved something special.
