Mirfield veterans receive hampers in honour of Trafalgar Day

Veterans in Mirfield have received some special hampers in honour of Trafalgar Day.

The hampers have been made by Mirfield stalwart Tim Wood and his wife Carol, who set up the Crown Service and Veterans Association “many years ago” to help the elderly veterans in the area.

The 22 hampers have been filled with treats including soups, biscuits, nuts and beer, as well as ham provided by Haigh’s Farm Shop.

Today (Wednesday, October 21) marks the 221st anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in which Admiral Lord Nelson led the British Royal Navy in defeating a combined French and Spanish fleet.

Tim said: “We used to celebrate Trafalgar Day in this country and I think it is important to commemorate a British achievement.”

Tim and Carol are no strangers to helping local veterans throughout the calendar year. The couple celebrated 25 years of delivering Christmas hampers in 2025, and they also provide baskets of goodies at Easter.

Asked how well-received the kind-hearted gifts are, Tim joked: “I haven’t had one thrown back in my face yet!”
