Yates, who fights out of Dicky’s Gym, on Hick Lane, won all three rounds, dropping his opponent in the third with a right hand which caught Smith flush on the chin after setting up the shot with a right uppercut.

The 17-year-old former Batley Parish School pupil, who now lives in Gomersal, will go on to represent Yorkshire against the Tyne and Wear/Teeside champion on November 20 in the England Championships quarter final.

Yates is hoping to go one better than the semi-final stages he has reached on his last two ventures into the nationals.

Yates has been gaining invaluable experience from experienced pro coach Abed Rahman.

Yates said: “Abed has taken me to another level, he even got me three rounds of sparring with one of my heroes, current British and European Champion Josh Warrington along with up and coming pro boxer Jack Churchill and I cant thank them all enough.”
