Falklands War hero remembered at anniversary service

Lt Cdr Robinson served with the Royal Navy during the conflict but died when his boat, HMS Coventry, was sunk.

The service was attended by several members of his family, including some who travelled from Devon.

It was held on Friday May 25, the 30th anniversary of Lt Cdr Robinson’s death, and it was the first time a memorial service had been held for him in his home town.

The service was led by the Rev Hugh Baker from Mirfield Team Parish and the Mayor of Mirfield Coun David Pinder gave an address.

Coun Pinder is a military veteran himself, and served alongside Lt Cdr Robinson in the Falklands War.

He said: “It was a very moving service – simple, but very moving, and Lt Cdr Robinson’s family were very, very pleased with it all.”

Messages that paid tribute to Lt Cdr Robinson were read out during the service, including one from the Falkland Islands Assembly and one from the territory’s government.

A message was also sent by Trudi McPhee, one of the islanders who helped British forces as they fought for control of the islands.
