Couple stay close for 50 years

a LONG distance courtship brought a couple closer together – and last Friday they celebrated their golden wedding.

Keith and Gaynor Liversidge met when Llandudno-born Gaynor worked as a nurse at the former Church of England Children’s Society orphanage, in Mirfield, but were separated when Keith was posted to northeast Scotland during his National Service.

However, overnight train journeys and weekend meetings at Belle Vue, Manchester, failed to derail their love affair and they married in Gaynor’s home town on September 23 1961.

They marked their anniversary with their three daughters, five grandchildren and friends at Dewsbury Golf Club, where Keith has served as captain and president.

Keith worked all his career for a Huddersfield engineering firm, working his way from apprentice to service director, while Gaynor was a nursery nurse in several schools and also helped set up Water Royd Playgroup.

Gaynor said: “We have very different natures but they work well together.”

Keith added: “It’s all about being tolerant, listening and talking things through, so problems don’t grow.”
