Club wants to welcome all

So it is as good to be able to report a success story for a local club as it is for a pub.

An ambitious scheme comes to fruition tonight at Lower Hopton Working Men’s Club with the opening of the club’s newly refurbished function room.

This has been a major investment for the club in North Street, costing just over £45,000.

Club secretary John Adams said: “We’ve been able to achieve this by careful financial management over the years, coupled with a realistic pricing policy, and that has enabled us to save the money for the refurbishment.”

Mr Adams, a retired teacher, has been secretary for two years and was previously treasurer.

“The function room was dated and old fashioned and we decided it was now time to bring it up to date,” he said. “The room has been gutted and completely refurbished.”

The function room will be available for hire for anniversaries and parties.

“The aim is for the club to become a focal point of community life in Mirfield,” said Mr Adams, “particularly as so many pubs in Mirfield have closed. We don’t rejoice in this, there should be room for all sorts.”

Lower Hopton Working Men’s Club – and Mr Adams is quick to point out that women can now become members in their own right – has 626 members, with a successful bowls club and is also the base for two football teams.

“At the end of the day we want the people of Mirfield to see this as a facility they can enjoy,” said Mr Adams.

“We want to give people a decent environment where they can enjoy a drink.”
