Batley man, 20, hit and killed by train near Dewsbury station

A man who died after being hit by a train near Dewsbury railway station was a 20-year-old from Batley, British Transport Police have said.

The incident happened at around 2pm on Saturday near the Webster Hill railway bridge.

Rail services were halted and diverted for four hours while emergency services and Network Rail officials attended the scene.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Our officers were called to Dewsbury railway station at 1.58pm on Saturday, January 10, after receiving reports that a man had been struck by a train.

“Colleagues from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and West Yorkshire Police also attended but sadly the man, who has been identified as 20-year-old and from the Batley area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The man’s family have been informed.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

It comes less than two weeks after a 78-year-old Ossett man was found dead on the tracks close to Dewsbury station.
