Birkenshaw pupils learn about democracy and elections thanks to visit from MP
Pupils at a school in Birkenshaw have learned about life in politics thanks to a visit from the MP for Spen Valley.
Kim Leadbeater visited BBG Academy alongside representatives from the Electoral Commission to speak with students about democracy, elections and the importance of participating in public life.

During the visit, students took part in engaging discussions about how elections work, the role of MPs, and why voting is an important way for people to have their voices heard. The session also explored the work of the Electoral Commission in promoting free and fair elections and helping people understand the democratic process.
Kim said: “It was a pleasure to visit BBG Academy and meet such thoughtful, engaged and inquisitive students. Young people have a vital role to play in shaping the future of our communities and our country, and it is so important that they understand how our democratic system works and the difference they can make.
“I’m grateful to the Electoral Commission for helping inspire the next generation of voters and active citizens.”
The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to encourage democratic engagement among young people.
After the visit several of the students said how informative it was to hear about the life of an MP with one describing the lesson as “spectacular”.
Kim thanked the staff at BBG Academy for their warm welcome and for their continued commitment to providing students with opportunities to engage with current affairs and civic education.
She also encouraged young people to continue asking questions, taking an interest in local and national issues, and making their voices heard as active members of their communities.
