Bilal is all-round star as Woodlands book place in Priestley Cup final

Woodlands CC put previous problems against Jer Lane well behind them with a commanding victory that saw them cruise into the Bentley Drains Priestley Cup final.

Jer Lane have been a bit of a thorn in the side of Woodlands in recent years, beating them four times in the league since their entry from the Halifax League.

But there were no worries on Sunday as six times winners Woodlands sailed into another final with a massive 216-run success.

They will now face reigning Bradford League champions New Farnley in the final at Lightcliffe on August 16 after they beat Pudsey St Lawrence by three wickets in a much closer semi-final.

Woodlands chose to bat first in their semi and recovered from a mid innings stutter to post a 276 total that was always going to be a big challenge for their opponents.

Most of the top order batsmen made starts without being able to go on to play a major innings, Noah Priestley (39) and Brad Schmulian (26) the best of the scorers as Jer Lane stayed in the game in reducing their hosts to 94-4 then 184-8.

But big-hitting all-rounder Muhammad Bilal lifted Woodlands to their big score as he hit 72 from 68 balls after coming in at number nine, including 11 fours and two sixes. Elliot Richardson gave him support with 23 in a valuable 78-run stand.

Lane’s stiff task quickly became an impossible one in their reply as five of their top six managed just two runs between them and they sank to 9-6 in the face of some outstanding bowling from Priestley and Bilal.

They were eventually all out for just 60 as Priestley took 5-26 and Bilal 4-9.
