Memories of August bank holiday in Dewsbury
I very much enjoy Margaret Watson’s Nostalgia articles and have followed her column for many years.
The recent article dated August 23 related to the August Bank Holiday and Margaret said that she could not remember having such a holiday when she was a girl.
This holiday was first introduced into law in 1871 when it was the first Monday in August and then in 1965 it was moved to the weekend of the last Saturday in August and finally in 1971 it was moved to the last Monday in August where it currently lies.
I am somewhat older than Margaret and can well remember this holiday prior to World War II.
