Glorious mix of colour, culture and tradition on show at latest Farmers’ Market in Heckmondwike
A glorious mixture of colour, culture and tradition was on show at the recent Farmers’ Market in Heckmondwike.
Held on Saturday, June 20, crowds flocked to New Square for a range of colourful market stalls selling crafted souvenirs, haberdashery, and knitted woollen garments.

Besides the usual cottage industry crafts, shoppers had the choice of buying homemade cheese, jars of honey and marmalade, fresh cream cakes and biscuits, roast potatoes and baked beans, samosas, kebabs, and a variety of carton-packed ready-made curries.
Stalls sold traditional tea, coffee, soft drinks, chocolates and sweets.
People were able to enjoy live outdoor music under the backdrop of large St George’s flags proudly hoisted on tall poles, while bouncy castles and other activities were laid on for visiting children. Spen Valley MP, Kim Leadbeater, former councillor Viv Kendrick and Aafaq Butt, also attended to show their support.
The Heckmondwike Farmers’ Market is held on the third Saturday of every month and this recent event coincided with the start of this year’s FIFA World Cup.
The market’s main organiser, Simon Thirkhill from the Fearless People group, said: “As usual, the footfall at the market was absolutely fantastic, bringing together the many different cultures that make up Heckmondwike’s amazing community.
He added: “The monthly market is growing, and the more stalls we can have, the better. The organisers are at the moment keen to see a stall at the market selling fresh fruits and vegetables, as well another stall selling fresh flowers.
“So please do get in touch if there is anyone out there ready to come forward.”
