What a knight! Merriment and mirth at Leeds medieval fair

Using the backdrop of Harewood’s All Saints Church and its 14th century castle ruin, the fair promises fun for all ages with battle re-enactments, an archaeological dig, encampments, a medieval market, the opportunity to try archery and get yourself locked in the stocks .

Visitors can hire medieval costumes and enjoy comedy shows from colourful jesters, medieval dancing and the Highland Games Arena.

Tours of the 14th century castle ruins, which were only revealed to the public in 2012, will be led by poet and filmmaker Simon Warner, who will bring to life the stories of those who lived and worked in the middle ages.

Discover the archaeological dig of the 13th century grand Gawthorpe Hall, demolished in 1774 and uncovered by York University students in 2012, and revealing remnants of the Gascoigne family who lived in the hall for 16 generations, with historic archaeologist Emily Rayner.

The weekend starts with a banquet on Saturday night overlooking the battlefield , with game pie, roasted hog and apple pie, washed down with plenty of ale and medieval music.
