Across the district there will be around 90 buildings to visit, and special events to enjoy, during the Heritage Open Days festival, which runs from Friday, September 11 until Sunday, September 20.
The annual celebration of heritage sees volunteers across the country organise events which showcase historic venues, and invite people to discover the fascinating histories of buildings on their doorstep.
In Dewsbury, two events will take place in Crow Nest Park: one exploring how trees interact with our lives, and the other recognising World Peace Day with a guided walk, tree planting and brass band performance.
Guided tours will take place in Dewsbury Arcade, teaching people about the history of the much-loved Victorian arcade.
Dewsbury’s oldest shop – John Greenwood Clothing and Jewellery – is inviting people to step inside and see the historical artefacts.
St Thomas’ Church in Batley is opening its doors to visitors, inviting them to wander around the Grade II-listed Victorian church and learn about its history and artefacts.
In Mirfield, the West Yorkshire Print Workshop is holding an open studio where visitors can learn about endangered heritage crafts such as letterpress printing.
A spokesperson for the Kirklees Heritage Open Days Committee said: “We are delighted that so many volunteers across the borough have once again risen to the challenge and put their hard work into this great festival, bringing many imaginative new ideas.
“It’s a splendid advert for the rich and diverse heritage of our towns, villages and countryside.
“With lots of events to choose from, there really is something for everyone, whatever your interests and wherever you live.”
Full details of all events in Kirklees, including booking arrangements, can be found on the Heritage Open Days website: www.heritageopendays.org.uk
