Woodlands secure HW Cup semi place

Hanging Heaton batsman Joe Fraser, in action against Cleckheaton on Saturday, was unable to prevent them bowing out of the Heavy Woollen Cup.

Woodlands’ only triumph in England’s oldest cricket competition came in 2004 but the Oakenshaw men became the first side to reach this season’s semi-final.

Woodlands batted first against their Central Yorkshire League opponents and compiled a challenging total of 241-9 with Chris Brice making 58 and Logan Weston 49.

Matthew Varley was the pick of the Thornes bowlers with 4-42.

Matthew Jordan made 57 in the Thornes reply but they were bowled out for 175 as Woodlands captain Pieter Swanepoel led the way with 4-44, while young pace bowler Elliot Richardson took 3-37.

Gomersal secured a superb three-run victory in their War of the Roses second round tie against Lancastrians Delph and Dobcross.

Wicketkeeper Jack Seddon made an aggressive 111 and was supported by Jonathan Boynton (74) as Gomersal reached an impressive 289-7.

Arron Lilley threatened to lead a successful chase for Delph and he made a brilliant 157 but his side were dismissed for 286 as James Russell picked up 4-47.

Gomersal will meet holders Pudsey Congs in the quarter-finals after they overcame Hanging Heaton by 155 runs.

Congs racked up 447-6 in their first round victory over Scholes and continued the trend of making big totals, reaching 344-3 at Hanging Heaton.

Opener Nick Lindley set the tone with a fine innings of 115 not out, which included nine fours and three sixes.

Captain Gareth Phillips (75) shared a 162-run second wicket partnership with Lindley and Callum Geldart produced some lusty blows late in the innings, making 64 from just 26 balls, including four fours and six sixes as Congs piled on the runs.

Gary Fellows (28) and Nick Connolly (29) made a brisk start with a 47-run stand for the first wicket, Ben Elvidge made 31, while Ismail Dawood top scored with 44 but Heaton were bowled out for 189 with former East Bierley off-spinner Kez Ahmed claiming 4-33.

New Farnley defeated Skelmanthorpe by 63 runs and travel to Townville in the quarter-finals.

The final last-eight tie is an all Huddersfield League clash between Hoylandswaine and Kirkburton, who defeated Central Yorkshire League champions Methley by 83 runs.

Former Mirfield Parish Cavaliers man Iqbal Khan smashed 130 as Kirkburton posted 276-6 before restricting Methley to 193 all out, despite the efforts of Marcus Walmsley (66).
