Woodlands and Scholes crash out

James Stansfield top scored with 41 for Scholes but was unable to prevent them bowing out of the Heavy Woollen Cup to Methley.

Woodlands suffered a surprise five-wicket defeat to Huddersfield League side Kirkburton, while Scholes bowed out at the hands of Methley.

Townville overcame Shepley by five wickets to reach the semi-finals for the second year in a row and ensure the Central Yorkshire League have two representatives in the last four.

The remaining quarter-final, between Delph & Dobcross and Pudsey Congs, is to be rearranged.

Woodlands batted first away to Kirkburton but were soon in trouble having been reduced to 32-4.

Chris Brice(36) and Usman Salim produced an 80-run fifth-wicket stand to get Woodlands back on track.

Salim also fell for 36, while captain Pieter Swanepoel made 32 before Sarfraz Ahmed hit a quickfire 24 late on.

Kirkburton had knocked cup holders Hanging Heaton out on a midweek bowl-out to set up Sunday’s tie.

Despite hitting the stumps with four consecutive balls in the bowl-out, Kirkburton bowled a staggering 33 wides against Woodlands, contributing to to 54 extras as the visitors were bowled out for 219 from the final ball of their innings.

Although Andy Smith made 31 at the top of the Kirkburton innings, Woodlands fought back as Swanepoel claimed 3-52 to leave the home side on 118-5.

However, Jonathan Butterfield (83no) and Usman Malvi (62no) produced an unbroken 103-run fifth wicket stand to steer Kirkburton into the semi-finals.

Scholes went into their quarter-final tie against Methley with high hopes as they lead the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division.

However, the New Popplewell Lane side were pegged back by former Cleckheaton player Eddie Walmsley, who opened the bowling and claimed 3-3 from 10 overs with his off-spin.

James Stansfield won the cup with Hanging Heaton last season and the Scholes captain offered resistance with a top score of 41 before his side were bowled out for 139 as Sohail Raz picked up 3-34.

Joe Duffy claimed 3-55 in reply but Methley eased to a seven wicket win, with Chris Holliday making an unbeaten 53.

Nick Bresnan (4-38) and Jack Hughes (3-18) combined to help Townville dismiss Shepley for 134.

Hughes then hit 66 not out to steer Townville to a comfortable five-wicket win.

The Central Yorkshire League are guaranteed a representative in the Heavy Woollen Cup final after Methley were drawn at home to old foes Townville in Tuesday’s semi-final draw.

HW Cup semi-final draw: Methley v Townville, Delph & Dobcross or Pudsey Congs v Kirkburton.

Crowther Cup semi-final draw: Hanging Heaton v Morley or Ossett, Skelmanthorpe v New Farnley. Ties to be played Sun July 6.
