Wood shines as Birstall bag local bragging rights

Craig Wood starred with bat and ball as Birstall bagged the local bragging rights over Batley in the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division.

Wood snared 4-26 with the ball and was helped by Robert McFarlane (3-30) and Saif Ur-Rehman (2-33) as Batley were back in the pavilion for 170.

Fawad Maqsood hit a half century for Batley and Shaukat Ali got to 46 before suffering a run out.

Wood went on to showcase his abilities with the bat when he opened with 67, with McFarlane backing up with 42, as Birstall reached their target with five wickets to spare, despite the efforts of Maqsood, who took 3-41.

Mirfield PC came out on top by just one run in their top-flight thriller against Ossett.

Batting first, Mirfield made 233-8, largely thanks to Ibrar Latif (51), Arman Hussain (42no) and David Winn (38).

Mirfield looked to be cruising when they had Ossett at 34-5 but Khalid Bilal’s impressive knock of 81 and Charles Orme’s 51 got the Dimple Wells side back on track only for the Mirfield bowlers to thwart them with just one run in it.

Muhammed Shahnawaz (4-52) and Michael Padgett (3-65) starred in the Mirfield bowling attack.

Hopton Mills were victorious against Scholes in the battle at the top of Division 1.

Mills won by two wickets in the close-fought contest to stretch their lead at the top to seven points.

Hopton had their rivals back in the pavilion for 160 thanks to some pin-point bowling. Ashley Mackereth led the way with 4-27 and he was well backed-up by Philip Scott (2-11), Michael Carroll (2-19) and Richard Myers (2-53).

Joseph Duffy top-scored for Scholes with 51.

Mackereth also hit an unbeaten 35 in Hopton’s reply and Tahmidul Islam helped him out with 39 to see Mills to victory. The result allowed Liversedge to move level on points with second-placed Scholes thanks to a resounding 55-run success against Buttershaw SP.

Mark Hydes bagged a half century and Connor Rowlands finished unbeaten on 41 as Liversedge made 211-9.

Graeme Winn (3-30) led the way with the ball as Buttershaw were skittled out for 156.

Elsewhere in Division 1 East Ardsley beat basement side Mirfield by 73 runs.

Mirfield PC A crushed Birstall A by eight wickets to keep their Division 2 promotion hopes firmly on track.

Adam Holroyd was the only one in double figures with 14 as Daniel Padgett Snr (5-15) and Tom Fretwell (5-30) ripped through the Birstall batting line-up to limit them to just 47. Neil Parkinson (27) helped lead Mirfield home.

Batley A enjoyed an equally comfortable eight-wicket success at Townville A. Saqid Talib (4-18) and Altaf Hussain (3-6) led the Batley attack as Townville were out for 83. Zubayr Karolia (37) and Bilal Abbass (32) saw Batley home.

Scholes A kept their Division 3 promotion hopes alive with a 46-run victory over Hunslet Nelson A.

Thornhill A beat Liversedge A in Division 4 and both Hopton Mills A and Mirfield A tasted defeat.
