Wardlaw announces Scotland retirement

Wardlaw was part of the Scotland squad who competed at the ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the 29-year-old made 22 One Day Internationals for the Saltires.

He claimed 45 wickets, with best figures of 4-22 against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi in early 2015.

His final appearance for Scotland saw him lead the bowling attack against eventual World Cup winners Australia in Hobart.

Dewsbury-born Wardlaw said: “It has been the highlight of my cricketing career playing for Scotland, and would like to thank all the players, staff and fans of Scottish cricket for their passion and support throughout my time with the national team.

“I couldn’t have wished to have played with a better group of lads who I wish all the success in the future.

“I’ve seen the team develop into a much more mature and disciplined unit over the last few years, and I am sure there’s special things to come from this group of players. I’m looking forward to seeing them play on the big stage in the near future.”

Scotland head coach Grant Bradburn also paid tribute to Wardlaw, adding: “Iain can be proud that he has made a big contribution to the Cricket Scotland and the team.

“Iain is highly respected within the side and his contributions both on and off the park will be missed. It is fantastic to see our retiring players moving onto meaningful careers, and we wish him all the best in this next exciting chapter of his life.”

Wardlaw claimed 6-57 as Bradford League champions Cleckheaton defeated Undercliffe by 14 runs in last Sunday’s Priestley Cup second round tie.
