Victory sees Celtic rise to second spot

Dewsbury Celtic took advantage of teams being in county cup action last Saturday to move up to second place in Yorkshire League Two with a 32-14 home win over Manston.

Liam Walmsley opened the scoring with an unconverted try at the corner in the fifth minute before the visitors touched down to level eight minutes later.

Celtic responded well and Alex Walmsley broke on the halfway line to race clear for a try at the posts which he then converted before Manston made it 10-10 with a second try and goal.

The hosts nudged ahead at the break as Liam Walmsley raced the length of the field for an uncoverted score and in the second half continued Celtic pressure on the Manston line brought great reward.

There were two tries for Tom Norris, both converted by Alex Walmsley, to make it 26-10 but unfortunately as the second was scored the game was stopped when a Manston player had to be taken to hospital with a broken leg and dislocated ankle.

The game eventually re-started with Tom Perks scoring in the corner, but Manston never gave up and were rewarded with a last minute try. Celtic’s MoM was Kevan McGrath.

n Celtic’s Under-18s suffered their first defeat in the National Youth League, 28-22 at Featherstone Lions.

Featherstone struck first to lead 6-0 before Celtic hit back as Tommy Crabtree put Lewis Wilson in at the corner.

Celtic then took the lead with Matty Sheridan’s try before Ryan Crossley stretched over to touch down and give them a 12-6 advantage.

Featherstone levelled matters with a second try and conversion while in the second half play swung from end-to-end.

Sheridan scored his second try, again unconverted, but the home side went ahead with a third converted score.

Celtic’s fifth try of the game came when Josh Brooke forced his way over between the sticks.

Josh Sykes added the goal and with 10 minutes remaining they held a 22-18 lead but Featherstone rallied and finished off with two more tries and a goal to seal victory.
