Veteran Burland leads Sharks to victory

A dominant display by the Shaw Cross pack, led by veteran prop Andy Burland, paved the way for victory.

Robbie Byatt was in outstanding form at centre, while Danny Flowers produced an excellent kicking game, converting six of the Sharks’ seven tries.

Victory keeps alive the Sharks’ hopes of reaching the end of season play-offs with four matches of the regular season remaining.

The opening stages were even but Cross broke the deadlock when second row Greg Wilby scored the opening try after 17 minutes, which Flowers converted.

Burland added a second soon after and Flowers’ goal put the Sharks 12-0 ahead and in control.

But full-back Sam Ottewell was sin-binned for holding down and it was while Cross were reduced to 12 men that Ince hit back with a brace of tries from centre Jamie Maloney.

When Ottewell returned, the Sharks regained control as Robbie Byatt and winger Jack Gledhill scored and a further Flowers goal put them 22-10 ahead at half-time.

Ryan Eccleston replied with a try for Ince, goaled by Baker, but substitutes James Davies and Will Poching scored for the Sharks, both converted by Flowers.

Baker struck with a converted try for the visitors but winger Ross Roebuck grabbed the Sharks seventh try, which Flowers goaled, before Nathan Doherty scored a last minute consolation try for Ince.

Dewsbury Moor remain sixth in National Conference Division Three despite slipping to a 28-10 defeat to West Yorkshire rivals Stanningley.

Josh Tate and Jackson Green scored a brace apiece for Stanningley, with Jack Brown also crossing and Callum Smithson adding four goals.

Moor replied with a try and goal from Jacob Flathers and a George Croisdale effort but the Maroons must now beat lowly Wibsey on Saturday and win away to champions elect Hunslet Club Parkside on October 3 to guarantee a play-off spot.
