UPDATE Thursday noon: Gale, Bresnan and Pyrah shine as Yorkshire CCC seal vital victory over Worcestershire at Scarborough

On Monday, international pace man Tim Bresnan, from Hartshead, led the way for Yorkshire claiming 4-64 just two days after he helped England clinch a one-day series win over Sri Lanka at Old Trafford.

Dewsbury-born Richard Pyrah ended with 2-28 from 14 overs to help dismiss Worcestershire for 168.

Captain Andrew Gale, from Cleckheaton, then led the Yorkshire innings as he ended the first day on 68 not out, having hit 12 fours as they reached 135-5, just 33 runs behind.

Gale fell for 72 on Tuesday morning but Yorkshire drew level with Worcestershire’s total at noon.

Yorkshire went on to reach 235-6 by lunchtime on Tuesday, a lead of 67 runs, with Bresnan hitting seven fours on his way to 41.

Bresnan fell shortly after lunch on Tuesday without adding to his total and although Yorkshire then slipped to 258-9, Ajmal Shahzad and Ryan Sidebottom shared a brilliant last wicket stand of 109.

Shahzad was last man out on the stroke of tea having made 70 with Sidebottom making 28no as Yorkshire were bowled out for 367 - a healthy first innings lead of 199.

Pyrah and Bresnan both had bowling spells early in Worcestershire’s second innings as the visitors faced 28 overs on Tuesday evening.

Bresnan took a catch to remove one opener, while two more wickets fell before Pyrah also picked up a wicket to leave Worcestershire 82-4.

However, Worcestershire fought back well on Wednesday and they were bowled out just before tea for 332.

Pyrah ended the second innings with 4-91 from 21 overs, while Bresnan’s figures were 0-75 from 27 as Worcestershire built up a 133-run lead.

Yorkshire reached 80-3, with captain Gale falling for 17 on Wednesday evening but they took less than an hour to score the 54 runs needed to complete a six-wicket victory, which moves them out of the County Championship relegation zone.

Last Sunday, Richard Pyrah became the first Yorkshire player to claim a five-wicket haul in a Twenty20 match.

Pyrah’s superb return of 5-16 from four overs helped Yorkshire defeat Durham by three wickets at Scarborough.

Gale made 34, while Pyrah hit the winning six to finish 17 not out in a game which saw current Cleckheaton player Iain Wardlaw bowl a tidy spell of 0-21 from his four overs.
