Trojans triumph to set up Sharks tie – Thornhill A four clear

Thornhill Trojans emerged victorious from a full blooded Jim Brown Heavy Woollen Cup tie where both sides gave their all.

Thornhill’s man-of-the-match was Anthony Broadhead who ran hard and passed well as his side booked a semi-final date against Shaw Cross Sharks.

Jake Wilson also impressed with powerful runs while Ossett featured former Thornhill men in Liam Green, Scott Craven, Jordan Goodwill and Jonny Bond.

As the players adapted to the sticky conditions scoring chances were at a premium early on.

Twice Thornhill had tries ruled out for forward passes before their persistence paid as Liam Morley charged down a kick 20 metres from the Ossett try line and Chesanco James pounced for a try which Sam Ratcliffe converted.

Anthony Harris and Simon Walker combined for winger Sam Ratcliffe to score an unconverted try before Thornhill had a man sent off.

Bond drove the ball forward and was tackled by Rob Kelly. Their team-mates rushed in to try to calm the situation as the two players squared up and when order was restored Kelly was shown the red card for an alleged head butt.

Thornhill dug in and scored again as quick handling spun the ball wide and Adam Bird score an unconverted try at the corner for a 14-0 lead.

Right on half time Ossett full-back Johnny McGee was sent to the sin-bin for holding down Scott Green for too long after a fine break by the Trojans man.

Sam Ratcliffe scored soon after the break following a good run by Walker, which saw him beat several tacklers, before Sam Ratcliffe spoke out of turn to the referee when he ruled a Thornhill player had gone into touch and was sent to the sin-bin.

Once Thornhill returned to 12 men Jake Ratcliffe forced his way over from close range for a try and Johnny Mack converted.

A late brace of tries from the strong running Simon Walker completed Thornhill’s try haul while Mack added a goal

Ossett managed a late consolation try through former Trojan Green who pounced on a kick through to touch down before Simon Lindsey converted.

n Leaders Thornhill Trojans A maintained their 100 per cent record in Pennine League Division Seven and moved four points clear, much to the delight of coach Ian Rayner, with an impressive 32-10 win at Selby Warriors in their top two clash.

The game saw 47-year-old grandfather Vinnie Johnson once again come out of retirement to help make up the numbers.

Star of the show for Thornhill was stand-off Craig Holmes and he opened Thornhill’s account when he went over after 10 minutes straight from a scrum. Mark Hodgson converted.

Thornhill’s Nicky Byrnes was sin-binned and while the visitors were down to 12 men Selby scored through captain and former Trojans winger Jordan Drummond.

On the half-hour mark James Folan scored for the Trojans and Hodgson converted to see them 12-4 ahead.

Second half scorers were Shane Johnson (two), Brad Schofield and Sanchez James as Thornhill eased home. Hodgson added two goals.
