Trojans bounce back with impressive win

It was Thornhill’s first home game in four weeks and after a couple of disappointing results on the road, the Trojans clicked back into gear.

After a first half with many handing errors from both sides, Thornhill went into the break level at 10-10.

Mindaugas Bendikas and Sam Ratcliffe were the Trojans’ try scorers, with the latter adding a conversion, while Connor Parkinson and Ollie Odele replied for Wigan with a conversion from Gareth Thomas.

Perhaps a sign of the level of confidence in the visitors was shown when straight after the restart they chose to take two points from a penalty by Barry Rothwell, Gareth Thomas having retired from the game with a head injury mid way through the first half.

Five minutes later Thornhill commenced a devastating spell in which they scored 18 points in seven minutes.

From a scrum on the 10 metre line, the ball was worked to Sam Ratcliffe who touched down in the corner.

Thornhill were back on attack following a 40-20 and Liam Morley took a pass from Danny Ratcliffe.

Jake Ratcliffe then went over between the posts after following up a kick by Jake Wilson. Sam Ratcliffe converted all three tries.

On the hour, the ball was worked to James Craven who scored in the corner, the conversion was missed, but Thornhill were in command.

Five minutes later Jake Wilson took a pass 30 metres out and beat three defenders to go between the posts. Sam Ratcliffe converted.

Craven collected Danny Ratcliffe’s pass to score again and Sam Ratcliffe landed the touchline goal to complete Thornhill’s tally.

Wigan grabbed a consolation try when Nathan Bevan powered in from close range and Adam Lavin converted.

Veteran half-back Scott Dyson, who had worked tirelessly throughout, was Thornhill’s man of the match.
