Top kickers line up for the Golden Goal Cup

TEN amateur players will be vying for the title of best goalkicker in the district tonight (Friday) at Mount Pleasant ahead of Batley’s derby at home to Dewsbury.

Players from Batley Boys, Birstall Victoria, Dewsbury Moor, Dewsbury Celtic, Hanging Heaton, Heavy Woollen Donkeys, Ossett, Shaw Cross Sharks, Thornhill Trojans and DMR will compete for the Ponderosa Golden Goal Cup.

Each competitor will have five attempts at goal from various points along the 30-metre line in the qualifiers (start 6pm), with the best two going head-to-head in the final at half-time.

The finalists will attempt kicks from in front of goal 30 metres out and from the halfway line.

Bulldogs community coach Dan Winner and Rams counterpart James Stephenson organised the event in conjunction with One Community Foundation, a charity working to raise funds for voluntary organisations in Kirklees.

A similar event will run in the derby at Tetley’s Stadium on August 12 and it is hoped to continue it in future seasons. Associate sponsors include We Buy Gold, Mount Tabor Church, Kiddies Kingdom, Intoto, Redbrick Mill, West Riding Refreshment Rooms, Manrochem Ltd of Huddersfield plus 3D Kitchen, Bathrooms and Bedrooms.
