Thornhill’s cup run comes to an end

THORNHILL Trojans fell at the quarter-final stage of the Yorkshire Cup after a pulsating tie at West Bowling.

Thornhill were left to reflect on what might have been following two disallowed second-half tries.

Liam Morley returned to the Thornhill team following an injury and although not utilised until late in the game he will help bolster the squad for the remainder of the season.

Thornhill took an early lead through an Andrew Bates penalty but this score was soon cancelled out as a good interchange of passes carved the Trojans open and winger Elliot Cousins scored in the corner.

The home side took advantage of three successive penalties as Jack Dawson forced his way over. Ben Heald converted.

Three minutes into the second half Jake Wilson ran through the defence to plant the ball down over the line. Bates converted.

Moments later a flash of brilliance from Bates saw him chip over and follow up to score a try which he converted as Thornhill eyed a place in the semi-finals.

Thornhill’s Ben Kendall and Bowling’s Sam Whitehouse were sin binned following a fracas and straight after, Heald scored between the posts and converted.

Thornhill raised their game and Steve Grundy appeared to have gone over for a crucial try but referee Steve Presley ruled that Grundy had been held up.

Bird broke down the wing but was hauled down by a last ditch tackle and as the clock ticked towards full-time Thornhill pressed again and Jake Wilson appeared to have powered over but the referee ruled that the ball had been knocked clear before he had grounded it and Thornhill’s cup run came to an end.
