Thornhill A toast the title

The champagne flowed in Overthorpe Park last Saturday as Thornhill Trojans A beat Halifax Irish A 48-14 and celebrated winning Pennine League Division Seven.

It is a terrific achievement for a team that was only formed at the 11th hour and missed the opening round of fixtures because it wasn’t in existence.

The success of the A team is all part of the club’s revival at open age level.

Under the guidance of coaches Ian Rayner and Danny Fisher, the Thornhill team have gone unbeaten in the league all season so far.

The A team started slowly at home to Halifax Irish A and were held to a 14-14 interval score.

It took the introduction of experienced players Rob Hoyle and Neil Ratcliffe to set the Trojans onto winning ways in the second half.

Hoyle’s impact was immediate following his introduction and he scored a hat-trick of tries. Neil Ratcliffe also scored a second half try.

Other scorers as Thornhill pulled clear were Shane Johnson (two, Dale Brook, Vinnie Johnson and Tom Codman.

Mark Hodgson kicked six goals.
