Sykes to host open training session for fans

GARY Sykes will hold an open training session at Dicky’s Gym in Batley on Monday (6.30pm) ahead of his British super featherweight title defence against Gary Buckland in Sheffield a week tomorrow.

The Dewsbury boxer has sold more than 250 tickets for the fight, where victory will see him win the Lonsdale belt outright, and all supporters are invited to Monday’s session.

The 27-year-old from Dewsbury Moor was sparring with unbeaten super bantamweight Scott Quigg last night (Thursday) and will now begin to ease down sessions as fight night approaches.

Sykes said: “I have had seven or eight weeks hard training and feel I am in the best condition of my career. My main aim is to win the Lonsdale belt outright but I also want to gain revenge for my defeat to Buckland.

“I have been in with some top quality sparring opponents and had a really hard session against Carl Johanneson.

“I think Carl really upped his game after I beat him in my last defence and it proved to be eight really tough rounds.”

The weigh-in is next Friday (3pm) at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, Penistone Road, Sheffieldand is open to the public.
