Sykes eyes European rival for warm-up fight

PREPARATIONS are going well for Dewsbury boxing champion Gary Sykes’s non-title contest at Huddersfield Sports Centre later this month.

The Sykes camp have been looking at bringing over a European fighter for the fight on July 23 as the British super featherweight champion prepares to meet old foe Gary Buckland in the autumn.

Purse bids to stage the Buckland fight are due with the British Boxing Board of Control by Wednesday after which, there will be a scramble to find a venue and suitable date to accomodate television, although the clash must take place by the end of October.

Sykes is desperate to fight in front of his home crowd but Welshman Buckland wants it to be staged in either Newport or his home city of Cardiff.

Buckland recently defeated Jose Roberto Gonzalez in Mexico and is the only man to have beaten Sykes in the professional ranks, so the Dewsbury man will be out to set the record straight when they meet again, this time with the Lonsdale belt at stake.

Sykes will be aiming for a 19th win in 20 outings on July 23. Tickets are available from Mark Waters on 07890 071883.
