Superb Trojans in Yorkshire Cup final

Queens 30

A golden-point drop-goal by Liam Morley in extra time gave Thornhill a thrilling victory over the holders in the Yorkshire Cup semi-final at Bus Vale.

The teams had been locked at 30-30 after the 80 minutes and Morley’s one-pointer sent a large visiting contingent wild with delight.

The success over the powerful Leeds outfit on their own ground was Thornhill’s best performance since their days of beating the likes of Sheffield and Workington in the Challenge Cup and marks the return of the club as a force in the amateur game after a period of struggle when there were concerns for the Trojans’ future.

Queens are in the Pennine Premier Division, three divisions above Thornhill, and have had a notable record of success in all competitions in recent seasons but they were matched stride for stride by the visitors.

It was perhaps fitting that Morley should have the final say because he has remained loyal to the club through the difficult times as well as the glory days and has set a fine example to young players coming through.

Thornhill will meet Hunslet Old Boys in the final at Wakefield’s Belle Vue on December 27 after they gained a 19-10 home win over Sharlston Rovers.

The win by the Trojans featured some hard running and fierce tackling in a gripping contest which at times became stormy. Queens had two players sent off and two sent to the sin-bin as they tried to mix it with the determined Thornhill outfit, who refused to buckle and their side, led by some experienced hands, stood up to be counted.

Former Dewsbury, Batley and Hunslet player Darren Robinson led the Trojans’ scoring with a try and three goals.

Other tries came from Ben Eastwood, long-serving Anthony Broadhead, Scott Green and Morley, while Craig Holmes added two goals on a momentous occasion for Thornhill.

Queens replied through Adrian Filburn and Aaron Henry, who each scored two tries. Danny Mithcell and Chris Munden also crossed and John Milner kicked three goals.
