Sedge had not recorded victory since beating Retford 3-1 on December 1 but Eric Gilchrist’s men turned in by far their best performance of the season to thrash Staveley 8-1.

It was Liversedge’s biggest league win since they defeated Goole Town 8-1 in the 1995-96 season.

Liversedge were 2-0 up inside 12 minutes as new signing Jamie Moon bagged his first goal for the club to put them ahead and striker Matthew Bugg netted shortly after.

Staveley pulled one back after 22 minutes but Liversedge dominated the remainder of the first half as Adam Jarrett made it 3-1 after 31 minutes before Bugg added his second.

There was no let up in the onslaught after the break as Jarrett completed his brace and Gibril Bojang made it 6-1 after 59 minutes.

Bugg completed a deserved hat-trick and Bojang fired home a penalty five minutes from full-time to finish the rout and end a miserable night for the Chesterfield outfit.

Victory saw Liversedge move up a place to 14th in the Premier Division table and have closed the gap on Staveley, who are just above them, to eight points going into their final seven matches of the season.

Liversedge had gone into Tuesday’s game on the back of a 4-2 defeat at Parkgate last Saturday.

Sedge started brightly and took a fifth minute lead through Curtis McMahon only for Sam Smith and Jamie Smith to net within three minutes of each other to put Parkgate 2-1 up at half-time.

Chris Hirst levelled after 53 minutes but Martyn Lee put Parkgate back in front and as Sedge pressed late on, Tom Roebuck hit the home side’s fourth three minutes into injury time.

n Liversedge will look to build on Tuesday’s terrific win when they entertain fourth placed Tadcaster Albion on Saturday.
